James Slattery
    Chief Executive Officer

 James Slattery is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Millennium Laboratories.  Because of his own direct experience with people who suffer with chronic pain, he founded Millennium Laboratories and established the company’s two-fold mission:

·        To help alleviate human suffering through leading research and education that increases industry and public awareness of
pain management.

·        To transform the science of toxicology from a forensics model 
to improving clinical care for people in pain.

Prior to Millennium Laboratories, Mr. Slattery achieved success in broadcast communications and real estate development.  Among his many entrepreneurial accomplishments, he created the first satellite network in the United States which he later sold to a Fortune 50 broadcast company.

Mr. Slattery served for eight years as the Commissioner of Aeronautics for the State of Massachusetts. He continues to utilize his aviation background in the service of others through his role as a mission pilot for Angel Flight West, a non-profit organization that provides free medical assistance flights in the thirteen Western states. He also serves as the Chairman of the Florida Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) Foundation, a direct support organization that provides financial and logistical support for the PDMP operations.

Mr. Slattery holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts.



HOWARD APPEL
    President

Howard Appel is the President of Millennium Laboratories.  Prior to his promotion to President, he served Millennium as the company’s Chief Financial Officer.  As President, Mr. Appel's responsibilities include oversight of the company’s daily operations and implementation of its annual growth initiatives. Through his dual role as senior management and Board of Directors member, he also directs the company’s strategic initiatives and long term planning.

Mr. Appel has more than twenty-five years of experience as a Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer and Certified Public Accountant.  Prior to joining Millennium, he was CEO of a boutique financial advisory. He also served as Chief Financial Officer of Laffer Associates for 17 years. Mr. Appel has served on the Board of Directors of a number of publicly and privately held firms including Millennium. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Accounting from California State University, Chico.



RENEE BRYAN, MBA
    Vice President of Marketing & Strategic Planning

Renee Bryan joined Millennium Laboratories in April of 2009 as our Vice President of Marketing and Strategic Planning. She is responsible for leading all strategic marketing initiatives and charting an innovative focus for the company through driving brand recognition and business growth. Her marketing team leads the development of customer-facing vehicles to build awareness and trial of Millennium’s products and services.

Ms. Bryan has 20 years of progressive leadership in product management, strategic planning and business development roles for leading medical device firms. Her substantial expertise in corporate positioning and new product development were directed to national and global launches of new technologies. Prior to entering the medical device industry, she led marketing efforts at the acclaimed Cleveland Clinic Foundation, the Sisters of Charity Health System, and also at AT&T in the telecommunication leader’s post-divestiture stage of competing in a free market economy. 

She holds a Masters in Business Administration from Case Western Reserve University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Richmond, Virginia. 


David Cohen
    Chief Operations Officer

 David Cohen is the Chief Operations Officer of Millennium Laboratories. His responsibilities include new business analysis and development to expand the company’s core business.  As COO, he also has oversight of Millennium’s legislative initiatives and community and corporate outreach programs. He brings valuable experience to the company in negotiation, fund raising, SEC compliance and investor relations.

In his 28-year career, Mr. Cohen has been Controller, Chief Financial Officer and later Executive Vice President of a $500 million dollar real estate conglomerate operating in 38 states and the commonwealth territories.  He has twice served as a public company Chief Financial Officer. His experience encompasses varied industries including banking, telecommunications and high tech manufacturing.    He has also been involved with several start-ups and successfully navigated difficult turnaround situations. His reputation as a skilled negotiator is well-earned – he has raised more than $35 million for specific projects in private and public offerings.

Mr. Cohen has a Bachelor of Science degree in both Economics and Accounting. He is a Certified Public Accountant and has twice been licensed by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) as a Financial Operations Principal.


CHARLES MIKEL, Ph.D.
    Vice President/Chief Scientific Officer

As Vice President/Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Charles Mikel provides scientific leadership and direction to the laboratory operations and R & D programs at Millennium Laboratories.  Dr. Mikel is credited with originating the innovative drug testing methods, sample handling and data processing systems used in our state-of-the-art laboratories. 

Prior to joining Millennium Laboratories at its inception, Dr. Mikel was a founding scientist at Chembridge Research Laboratories (CRL) in San Diego, CA.  As a group leader in the contract research medicinal chemistry group at CRL, Dr. Mikel’s research advanced early-stage drug discovery for several leading pharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer, Astra-Zeneca, Merck, Boehringer-Ingelheim and Takada.

Dr. Mikel has published 30+ research papers and holds several U.S. and international patents related to toxicology, medicinal chemistry and combinatorial chemistry.  Dr. Mikel has also published several papers on organo-metallic macromolecular catalysts for use in hydrogen-based fuel cells.



ELIZABETH PEACOCK
    VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES

 As our Vice President of Sales, Elizabeth Peacock brings to Millennium Laboratories more than 20 years of U.S. and international sales management experience in the medical device and pharmaceutical industries.  Her pain management medication monitoring marketing experience includes her tenure as the Senior Vice President  of Sales and Marketing for Ameritox where she built the company’s initial direct  sales team.

 Ms. Peacock held Vice President level positions in sales and marketing with Baxter Cardiovascular Group and Hancock Jaffe Laboratories, a start-up company manufacturing biological grafts for Cardiovascular and Vascular Bypass and  Hemodialysis Access. At Hancock Jaffe she was responsible for developing and  implementing the company’s entry into the U.S. market following FDA approval including successfully building the company’s U.S. sales team. She also served as  Director of Sales for Research Medical, Inc.

Educated in Europe, Ms. Peacock attended schools in England, France and Italy.  She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business and Modern Languages from the University of Bath and a Master’s degree in Education and German from the University of Reading, both located in the United Kingdom.



MARVIN RETSKY, M.D.
    Medical Director

As our Medical Director, Marvin Retsky, M.D., applies his expertise in pathology to clinical matters as well as research that benefits and supports our network of physicians and staff treating chronic pain patients.

Dr. Retsky is a medical doctor with substantial experience as both a hospital department head pathologist and a clinical laboratory director of independent labs. He served as the Chief of Pathology at the Dewitt Army Hospital in Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, and subsequently returned to California as a staff pathologist and later Director of Laboratories and Chairman of the Department of Pathology at Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys, California. Dr. Retsky was an active staff member of Mission Community Hospital in Panorama City, California and the Co-Director of two independent laboratories, TMI Pathology Associates and Physicians Pathology Services, Inc. 

A graduate from the University of Illinois School of Medicine in 1966, Dr. Retsky took his post-graduate internship and pathology residency training at UCLA Affiliated Hospitals/Wadsworth Veterans Hospital in Los Angeles, California. He is certified by the American Board of Anatomic Pathology and the American Board of Clinical Pathology.



MURRAY ROSENTHAL, DO, FAPA
    Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Murray Rosenthal, a board-certified psychiatrist and Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, is our Chief Medical Officer. He knows the field of pain management from both the professional and personal side. He is a former chronic pain patient who underwent five major spine surgeries. As Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Rosenthal brings 26 years of diversified experience as a clinician, researcher and consultant to our program and provides a great value to our network of physicians and their support staff.

Within Millennium Laboratories, Dr. Rosenthal works with our senior scientific staff to develop educational and research programs that meet the needs of our pain practitioners, their staff and patients.  He is available to our network of physicians for lectures, discussions and consultations.

Prior to joining us, Dr. Rosenthal was Senior Medical Director and CEO of California Clinical Trials, an internationally recognized, multi-site, phase 1-4 CNS research group. During his tenure he conducted over 450 clinical trials in all areas of Central Nervous System (CNS) research.

Prior to medical school, Dr. Rosenthal spent four years as a graduate student in biochemistry and experimental pathology at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. His medical school training was at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine after which he completed a medical-surgical internship at the University of Rochester. Dr. Rosenthal became board certified in Psychiatry after completing a residency program in Psychiatry at the University of California-San Diego (UCSD) Medical Center. In 2004 he was honored by the American Psychiatric Association by becoming a Fellow.

His research and professional career began under the guidance of the late, world famous psycho-pharmacologist, Dr. John Feighner. His experiences have included many positions and directorships; Medical Director on an inpatient eating disorders program, consultant to the head injury and heart transplantation programs at Sharp Memorial Hospital, and working closely with several primary care networks located in Southern California.

A recognized industry leader, Dr. Rosenthal has lectured internationally, nationally and locally to colleagues, allied health professionals and the lay public and has appeared on many television and radio programs as a guest expert. Published on a wide variety of topics in psychiatry, sleep, pain and medical management of secondary emotional disorders, Dr. Rosenthal co-authored the reference book, Accelerating Global Drug Development. His 2007 original, sleep center based pilot research project raised important issues about the impact of proper sleep on pain management and neuro-cognition, a topic he is frequently asked to comment upon when he addresses pain specialists.
